Sahra MacNeill, Human Resource Coordinator at Kinduct, shares how offering experiential learning opportunities to students has benefitted the company.

What has been the biggest benefit of hiring students for your business?

"Hiring students to work with us has proven to enhance the overall level of collective innovation and excitement for our business and our product. As an organization making the shift from 'start-up' to 'scale-up', we generally encourage an atmosphere of collaboration, and the addition of student and youth teammates bolsters this philosophy. Furthermore, we recognize and value the immense importance of investing in Halifax's future by doing our part to provide exceptional opportunities to the students who will very shortly be the next strong presence in the Halifax community."

What is something you have learned from your students?

"Today's students are driven, bright, and talented. We learned early on that the value a student can bring to an organization has many levels and despite the relatively low level of actual work experience there is a drive to create an overall great experience for everyone within the organization, and a strong dedication to the greater community as a whole."

How does your company take advantage of the many acclaimed post-secondary institutions in Halifax?

"Halifax is one the best places you can be in Canada when looking to invest in youth. From the engaging and hands-on staff involved in co-op and student placements to career fairs, being an employer who values engaging students and young adults, we feel there is a goldmine in Halifax. There is no lack of opportunity to place students, and we actively participate in career fairs, co-op and student placement opportunities, and a number of our employees engage in mentorship programs to help students prepare for the transition to the workforce during the final years of their degrees. We have developed great relationships with many of the colleges and universities within the HRM, and we value the advice and input the placement specialists provide us each time we engage with them."
