GAME CHANGERS: Lindsay Construction wins Experiential Learning Award, Large Business Category

January 11, 2019

Locally owned and operated, Lindsay Construction provides exceptional building services to clients who value innovation, integrity, and experience. Lindsay Construction was the recipient of the Experiential Learning Award in the Large Business Category at the 2018 Game Changers Awards Gala.

Lindsay Construction’s goal is to treat students like full-time employees, value their input and feedback, challenge them, and do its best to help them feel like part of the Lindsay family.

Andy Knowles, Regional Director of Nova Scotia at Lindsay Construction, shares how experiential learning students have benefitted the company.

What has been the biggest benefit of hiring students for your business?

Lindsay has benefited from hiring students in a number of ways, but one general benefit stands out. We made a decision over a decade ago to focus on local growth and knew that in order to achieve our goal, we had to find good, well-rounded people who understood what Lindsay wanted to be. Through this growth, we learned that our career opportunities are very well-suited to smart, energetic individuals who want to apply what they learned in school and develop with the company. We have found that growing our talent internally provides benefits over hiring externally, as we can strengthen capabilities over time versus hiring individuals who might not effectively adapt to our methods or culture.

What is something you have learned from your students?
Students want opportunity, and when they are given the appropriate background, purpose, and responsibility, they are driven to excel and prove themselves. When harnessed properly, this drive can provide endless potential and confidence that then breathes life into all other areas of the business.

How does your company take advantage of Halifax’s many post-secondary institutions?
Lindsay takes pride in our relationships with post-secondary institutions across the Atlantic Provinces. These relationships allow us to support co-op placements and internships in a variety of areas (e.g., operations, engineering, estimating, finance, human resources), which provide meaningful opportunities for students to apply their knowledge while completing important projects and delivering real results for the company.

The Game Changers Awards recognize exceptional Halifax businesses and Connectors that hire youth, provide meaningful experiential learning opportunities and connect young professionals to opportunities in their field.
