GAME CHANGERS: TD Insurance Finds Outstanding Young Talent in Halifax

"You can't teach passion, energy and enthusiasm, but you can teach insurance."

Twenty years ago, Catherine Décarie moved to Halifax to open the first TD Insurance office with a team of six. Today, she leads a team of more than 400. Hiring young leaders has been critical to this growth and success. 

"TD Insurance has benefited greatly from hiring young leaders," says Catherine, associate Vice President of TD Insurance. "Through our access to quality talent emerging from local universities and colleges, we have been able to build an exceptional team. More importantly, these young people want to stay and make a difference right here in Halifax."

At TD Insurance, the client experience is paramount. To that end, TD aims to ensure they hire diverse talent with a willingness to go above and beyond.

"You can't teach passion, energy and enthusiasm, but you can teach insurance," says Catherine. "Youth have an evident thirst for information. From my experience, this has a positive impact on their professional development, their leadership skills, and their ability to help others. All in all, it creates a positive work environment."

Catherine also highlights that community is integral to the way young leaders exercise their leadership at TD, both through formal and informal settings.  

"There's something special about Halifax residents," says Catherine. "You feel it in the community and you feel it when someone new joins our team. They want to make a difference and engage. Our employees are very involved in their communities both within and external to TD."

A passionate and creative individual, his involvement in the aboriginal community led him to be a natural fit to help lead TD Insurance's first aboriginal summer internship program in Canada. Dan is currently completing his MBA while working full-time in the Digital Chat environment.

Sara:

Sara joined TD in August 2016. A driven and conscientious individual, her involvement in the LGBTQ+ community and her volunteerism keep her very busy when not supporting TDI clients within the client service team. Sara majored in Political Science at Acadia University.

Catena joined TD in January 2015. A dedicated, self-motivated and passionate individual, her involvement in the Women in Leadership program shows her commitment to helping others achieve their goals and contributes to TD's leadership pipeline for years to come. Catena has a degree in Human Resources and currently manages a bilingual client service team.

"Planning and pursuing your career path can be scary,” says Catherine. “It's not always an easy transition, so we do our best to encourage growth and help people prepare.”

Young leaders participate in various programs such as coaching, diversity committees and mentoring, among other resources. These stretch and development opportunities are mutually beneficial.
