Tech Business in Halifax, Made Easy

Posted: March 4, 2019

Ease of doing business in Halifax, combined with a $1.5 million grant from the Canadian Space Agency, fuel Aethera Technologies CTO Tim Hardy and COO Kirk Zwicker’s big plans for their company. “We’re all from Halifax, but we’re still surprised by how simple it is to do business here. The people, and how much they’re willing to offer and help, have made it really easy,” says Kirk.

The Canadian Space Agency is providing Aethera with a $1.5 million grant to develop power conversion technology for Ad Astra Rocket Company.

With eight full-time employees (including several who are recent grads or co-op students), radio frequency engineering company Aethera Technologies Ltd. is all about recognizing the skilled young workforce Halifax has to offer their growing startup.

“Growing talent is important. We have been able to tap into a terrific pool of young talented professionals in Halifax,” says Tim. To help share and improve on those resources, the team recently purchased and is renovating a building in Halifax which will soon be transformed into a space that can be used for both the consulting and manufacturing side of the business. The new space will allow for growth up to 20 people, which will make doing business in Halifax even easier.

Aethera was founded in Halifax in 2014, with operations kicking into high gear during the middle of last year. Its current focus is consulting work, research and product development for clients focused on wireless communications and radio frequency power. The projects include high efficiency power conversion and dielectric heating systems, a revolutionary heating method that is comparatively faster and more energy efficient than traditional heating. The team at Aethera sees dielectric heat as untapped potential that creates huge opportunity for the technology industry and the workforce in Halifax.
