Gloria McCluskey

Councillor, Halifax Regional Municipality

Gloria was  the first female Accredited Appraiser of the Appraisal Institute of Canada in Nova Scotia. She served a term as  President of the Nova Scotia Chapter for one year.   Gloria became the Director of Assessment for the City of Halifax, then the Assistant to the Provincial Director of Assessment. In 1986, she became President of McCluskey

Assessment Consultants and Appraisers Limited. 

She was elected as Alderman in the former City of Dartmouth in 1985, was re-elected in 1988, and acclaimed in 1991.She served as Deputy Mayor in 1991 and was elected Mayor in 1992. In 1994, she retained the Mayor’s chair by acclamation and served until amalgamation which brought into being the Halifax Regional Municipality.

During her tenure in the Mayor’s chair, Gloria met and hosted a number of dignitaries, including Queen Elizabeth II, and the wife of then-Soviet Premier Boris Yeltsin.   

During her hiatus from municipal politics, she worked as a Panelist on CBC’s First Edition, and served as Honorary Colonel for Squadron 406, Shearwater. She is an avid golfer, and has had not one “Hole In One,” but two.   

In 2004, she re-entered Municipal service by gaining the seat as Halifax Regional Councillor in Dartmouth Centre. In 2008, she retained the seat by acclamation.
