The Halifax Partnership is seeking an Account Executive - SmartBusiness Program. Reporting to the Director Trade & International Partnership, the Account Executive, Smart Business will proactively engage face to face with locally based companies with the goal of leveraging and expanding the current innovation capacity, capabilities and global competitiveness of Halifax and Nova Scotia businesses.

This position is part of the team that is focused on building an innovation-driven entrepreneurial ecosystem in Halifax.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Account Management

  • This role will meet face to face with and support local companies that have the potential to increase R&D or export capacity. The goal of this position is to help increase global competitiveness.
  • This role will work to connect companies to the resources they need to have a facilitated pathway to success.
  • Develop high-level expertise in the strengths, assets, programs and connections that the Halifax ecosystem can provide to companies to enhance both their R&D/innovation capabilities and the potential to export or increase their exports. Every company is unique, and development of customized solutions will need to be developed.
  • Develop and manage key client accounts and gain an in-depth understanding of each client's unique business needs and service offerings.
  • Initiate and conduct targeted interviews with company decision makers to collect information that will help identify and recommend action plans to respond to threats and opportunities.
  • Enter, compile and analyze interview data from company visits.
  • Through a structured referral system, make client connections to Action Committee member(s), partner organization and/or community stakeholders to respond to and/or support the immediate threats and/or opportunities.
  • Ensure consistent, quick follow-up and ongoing dialogue with action team members and stakeholders to ensure referrals have been acted upon in a timely manner.
  • Develop trusting working relationships with public organizations and private sector companies.
  • Meet assigned individual targets for company visitations and connections for companies.
  • This position has a high degree of accountability requiring weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting. Includes inputting data into corporate database to identify company specific and common issues and opportunities.
  • This position has a high degree of confidentiality.

Lead Generation:

  • In collaboration with other team and economic development partners identify local companies that should be targeted.
  • Leverage and build connections between Nova Scotia companies and the rural innovation hubs to maximize company engagement in market growth.



  • A post-secondary education.


  • Minimum five years' professional experience in business or sales.
  • Good verbal Communications and experience with stakeholder relations is considered an asset.
  • Ability to leverage relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate with clients and partners across multiple organizations and community groups.
  • Knowledge and understanding of industry sectors in Halifax.
  • Knowledge of the post-secondary institutions and their general strengths.
  • Strong interviewing and questioning techniques with the ability to uncover underlying business retention and expansion and labour force issues.
  • Proven high-level verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent database management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively as part of a team to meet organizational objectives.
  • Superior time management and organizational skills with the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work for self is a must.
  • Excellent follow-up skills.
  • Superior attention to detail.
  • Strong facilitation skills.
