“There are thousands of international students who study here each year. Setting a goal to retain a percentage would be huge for Halifax. The energy, the vibrancy, the type of mentality that would stay in Halifax would be inspiring."

Founded by two young entrepreneurs, Sean and James Court, Beaumont & Co. is a custom exhibit and display manufacturer and distributor for international trade shows and corporate locations.

Beaumont & Co. is committed to providing young professionals with career opportunities. They are prepared to only hire recent graduates and university co-op students for their growing small business. Their team members are all 20-29 years old with five of their staff in leadership roles. They hire recent graduates and co-op students through Dalhousie University's commerce program and the Work Smart program administrated by Saint Mary's University.

Over the years, they've worked hard to encourage private sector and community organizations to hire young professionals. Their efforts have been recognized in the Chronicle Herald, Business Voice Magazine, CBC Radio, the Guardian, and other media outlets.

Co-Founder, Sean Court, was also a Canadian delegate at the G20 Young Entrepreneur Summit in Beijing, China with 30 other young entrepreneurs. Sean is one of only a handful of delegates to attend the prestigious B20 Summit in Hangzhou, China along with the Canadian Prime Minister.

Beaumont & Co. has plans to expand in the near future. Their goal is to hire two new university co-op students, additional part-time booth installers and full-time recent graduates.

Sean Court shares how hiring youth has benefitted their business

What has been the biggest benefit of hiring young professionals for your business?

“Young professionals want to start fast, grow quick. We tell our employees, 'even if you aren't with us for 10 years or 15 years, when you leave, be better, be smarter and bring those skills with you'. If they bring that idea of always trying to grow themselves, everyone benefits from that mentality."

Why do you think other businesses should hire young professionals?

“One of the biggest themes and benefits in hiring youth is flexibility. At Beaumont & Co. we say every person in a company should be a marketing person. This generation of young professionals come with the tools to make them successful, with a skill set that older generations don't have. They grew up with technology. The sky's the limit when you hire youth."

Our goal is to reach zero net loss (retaining all youth), what does that mean for Halifax?

"There are thousands of international students who study here each year. Setting a goal to retain a percentage of them would be huge for Halifax. The energy, the vibrancy, the type of mentality that would stay in Halifax would be inspiring."

What advice do you have for a recent grad?

"In business, we say it's all about people, and it's people who hire you. Get connected with the Halifax Partnership and Fusion Halifax. At the Halifax Partnership, you can sit down with a member of the Connector Team and have a conversation about the industry you're looking to break into. After that initial meeting, they will match you with a Connector, who will connect you with three more industry professionals. At Fusion Halifax, they have several events where you can get involved, network and build relationships, or simply volunteer. You'll be surprised what a half hour conversation can do for you."
