Westin Nova Scotian Hotel, The
Hospitality and Conventions

The Westin Nova Scotian Hotel opened its doors in 1930 as the Nova Scotian Hotel. Since then it has been an integral part of the community in the South end of Halifax. Closed for two years in the mid 1990’s, the hotel was purchased in April 1996 by New Castle Hotels, a very successful hotel management company from Shelton, CT, whose leaders saw the potential of this great historic gem. On August 6, 1996, the hotel was re-opened as the Westin Nova Scotian, keeping the traditional name that Haligonians and visitors alike have come to know the hotel by. The rebirth of Halifax’s grand dame had begun.

Although owned by a US firm, the Westin Nova Scotian’s management team and staff are comprised of local and Canadian talent, which was a very important factor in the success and acceptance of the hotel back into the business environment. New Castle Hotels considers the Westin Nova Scotian as a flagship hotel in their portfolio of 30 hotels in the US and Canada.

The hotel is committed to giving back to the community and is involved in a significant number of large fundraising events in support of the Brigadoon Village, Progress Club, various local hospitals as well as supporting a number of other charitable organizations and industry associations.

The hotel is located in the heart of the South End of Halifax on Hollis Street in the Seaport District, overlooking Cornwallis Park and Halifax Harbour. The South End rejuvenation, which started with the re-opening of the hotel, is thriving with the addition of Pier 21, the Atlantic Superstore, the Halifax Farmers Market, Nova Scotia Power headquarters and many residential projects. The hotel is in the downtown business center and is close to all major attractions, museums, universities, restaurants, nightlife and shopping. A convenient shuttle service is offered by the hotel to serve guests’ transportation needs in the downtown core. Many guests prefer the quiet, residential environment of the hotel where they can enjoy a warm and friendly atmosphere in a quiet setting.
