HALIFAX, NS - March 2, 2016 – The Halifax Partnership is pleased to announce that Dalhousie University MBA student, Sarah Deveau, has won the Game Changers 'Pitch It' competition and the grand prize of $1,000.
Thirty students and recent graduates entered their best “Hire Me Halifax” video pitch for the Partnership's ‘Pitch It’ competition held in late January. A panel of seven Halifax business leaders judged the competition. Six of the 11 finalists presented their pitches live at the Game Changers 'Pitch It' event held yesterday afternoon.
Ron Hanlon, President and CEO of the Partnership, announced the competition winners – Sarah Deveau, first place winner ($1,000); Elizabeth Shaw, second place ($300); and Meghan Lafferty, third place ($200). The winners' and finalists' pitches can be viewed at http://ht.ly/YWa0W.
"The 'Pitch It' winners, and finalists, are excellent examples of the motivated young people who want to start and grow their careers in Halifax,” says Hanlon. “This event was all about showcasing our young talent and helping them connect to career opportunities in Halifax."
The event also included a networking workshop for students and a speed interview session with employers like Scotiabank, RBC, Desjardins, Blackstar Wealth Management, NTT Data, REDspace, ClearPicture and Arrow Electronics. Businesses benefited from a Hiring Expo offering resources and training programs to help them hire young people.
"Every business has a role to play in retaining our young people," says Hanlon. "Companies can help young people make professional contacts, offer experiential learning and co-op opportunities, and provide more job opportunities for recent graduates."
The Partnership launched the three-year Game Changers program in November to retain young talent in our city, a critical factor in growing Halifax's and Nova Scotia's economies. Through the Game Changers program, businesses can connect to the resources and opportunities they need to hire Halifax's young talent. For more information visit: www.halifaxgamechangers.com.
