 June 2, 2016

The Halifax community is celebrating Oceans Week from June 3-12, 2016. Events will take place throughout the week, including public lectures, an industry showcase, museum exhibits, beach clean ups, ocean yoga and more. There are several events planned for World Oceans Day on June 8th including the Halifax Oceans to Opportunity (H2O) Conference and Industry Showcase, the Elisabeth Mann Borgese Ocean Lecture Series, and a full-day of activities at the Discovery Centre.

“Our maritime identity brings us together, and Oceans Week is an opportunity for Halifax residents to take pride in and celebrate that identity,” says Monica Phung, Oceans Week HFX Coordinator. “The ocean is our home and it impacts our lives in so many ways.”

Halifax is a hub for oceans-related R&D, business, defence, recreation and tourism. The city is home to over 200 ocean-related companies, Maritime Forces Atlantic, and hundreds of scientists engaged in ocean research at Dalhousie University, Defence Research and Development Canada, the Bedford Institute of Oceanography and the Nova Scotia Community College. The ocean drives Halifax’s economy and provides competitive advantages in key sectors like ocean technology, defence and advanced manufacturing, and transportation and logistics.

“Halifax is Canada’s ocean city and our expertise and leadership in oceans research and technology development will only continue to grow,” says Ron Hanlon, President and CEO of the Halifax Partnership. “It’s an exciting time for the ocean sector with the development of the Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship, new innovations like the Cape Sharp Tidal turbine, and the many opportunities related to the National Shipbuilding Project.”
