Halifax Partnership Announces Winners of 2018 Game Changers Awards

October 18, 2018 – Halifax, NS – The Halifax Partnership is pleased to announce the winners of the 2018 Game Changers Awards, recognizing exceptional Halifax employers and Connectors who demonstrate leadership in hiring youth, offering experiential learning opportunities and inspiring others to take action to retain young talent in our city and province. The awards were presented at the Game Changers Awards Gala last night, with over 250 guests in attendance.

“In 2015, the Halifax Partnership, with support from private and public sector sponsors, launched the Game Changers Youth Retention Action Plan because we saw an opportunity to help local organizations connect with talent, and to help more young people build a future in Halifax,” says John Rogers, Interim President & CEO, Halifax Partnership. “The nominees and winners are proactively making Halifax a top choice for young talent.”

This year, the Partnership received 150 nominations for the Game Changers Awards. Nine awards were presented at the gala. The recipients are:

TD Best Youth Employer Awards:              Common Good Solutions (Small Business Category)

             REDspace (Medium Business Category)

Irving Shipbuilding Inc. (Large Business Category)

Best Super Connector Awards:                  Kent Lane, CBCL Limited

             Nick Misener, David Aplin Group

Best Connector Organization Award:        NATIONAL Public Relations

Presented by TD, the Game Changers Youth Retention Action Plan is a three-year private-sector driven initiative to retain young talent in Nova Scotia. Its ambitious goal is to reduce the net annual average youth outmigration to 0 by 2019.

Since Game Changers began, net interprovincial outmigration of youth aged 20-29 has improved significantly. In 2014-15, roughly 1,500 youth left the province on net. By the next year, youth outmigration had substantially improved, with only 222 youth leaving the province on net. The preliminary number for 2016-17 showed that only 231 youth left the province on net. The Partnership is eagerly waiting for Statistics Canada’s soon to be released data showing the preliminary number of youth who migrated between Nova Scotia and the rest of Canada in 2017-18. These data will be released in the coming months.

“Although Game Changers is wrapping up this month, the calls to action to hire youth, offer experiential learning opportunities, and be a Connector continue,” says Rogers. “We have made considerable progress in youth retention, and we can’t stop here. Together, we can make our city and province an excellent place for young professionals to start and grow their careers.”
