Mayor Mike Savage Named President of World Energy Cities Partnership

HALIFAX, NS – October 28, 2015 – Halifax Mayor Mike Savage was elected President of the World Energy Cities Partnership (WECP) today at the WECP’s 20th Annual General Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro.

A WECP member since 2001, Halifax is one of 23 world energy capitals that are collaborating to grow the global energy economy. WECP is a prestigious international organization, headquartered in Houston, Texas. WECP enables cities to expand business opportunities, share ideas on investment attraction and urban development, and develop strategic alliances with other world energy cities.

“Mayor Savage is an exceptional leader and a true champion for Halifax, and I’d like to congratulate him on this impressive appointment,” said Nova Scotia Energy Minister Michel Samson. “Mayor Savage’s work with WECP will continue to ensure Nova Scotia is well-represented on the international stage, creating opportunities for our energy companies and economic growth for our province.”

Mayor Savage assumes the role of President in January 2016 following on the great work of the current sitting President, Christine Sagen Helgø, Mayor of Stavanger, Norway. The Halifax Partnership will continue to manage Halifax’s WECP activities and provide support to Mayor Savage.
Lisa Scaffidi, Lord Mayor of Perth, Australia nominated Mayor Savage at the May 2015 WECP meeting in Houston which coincided with the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC).
“I was honored to nominate Mike Savage as President of the WECP,” said Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi, a former president of the WECP. “Mayor Savage’s leadership style and business development acumen will greatly benefit the organization as we grow.”

The annual WECP meeting brings together a diverse, multi-stakeholder community to provide the means to address these challenges and to build partnerships that support positive, transformative change. This year’s AGM is focused on three themes: oil and gas industry development; urban transformation; and policies to support research and development.

Over 400 participants from 150 companies in the oil and gas sector, including the presidents of Shell Brazil, GE Brazil, Statoil and Schlumberger Brazil are attending the meeting, as are the following WECP members and leaders of international delegations:
